BEST MOVIES TO WATCH STONED
The Wall (Pink Floyd)
When you think of the best movies to watch stoned, you really can’t go without mentioning The Wall. This movie has it all, from stunning psychedelic visuals to beautifully thought-provoking music. The plot is meaningful yet slightly nonsensical leaving plenty of room for deep-seated analysis.
This is Spinal Tap
This Rob Reiner classic is one of the best movies to watch stoned simply because… it’s hilarious. The spoof on 80’s metal bands follows David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnell through a journey of fame, fortune, and the ups and downs of friendship with legendary quotes and rockin’ music. Need I mention…. It goes to 11.
Clockwork Orange

Clockwork Orange is a Stanley Kubrick film long embraced by stoners everywhere. Your humble narrator, Alex goes from a life of crime with his Droogs and moves on to learn valuable yet ironic life lessons. Warning, the violence may harsh your mellow, but the film stands the test of time as one worth watching.
Cheech and Chong (Up and Smoke)

Any Cheech and Chong movie is terrific watching stoned, but Up in Smoke is arguably one of their finest. While I could recap the plot line, it really doesn’t matter. What’s important is that these two guys smoke a lot of pot and are absolutely hilarious. I guarantee you will not stop laughing.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python is another movie series that you can go wrong with when looking for the best movies to watch stoned. But Holy Grail is perhaps the best of the bunch. The film is known for its unbelievably witty slapstick humor and one-liners. Pro tip: watch it with subtitles as the dialogue may be difficult to understand given the thick British accents.
Princess Bride
This fairy tale adventure meets romantic comedy is anything but typical. While the plotline of the prince fighting to be reunited with his love, the princess, seems a bit ho-hum, the keen sense of humor and stunning cast is what sets it apart. Smoke up and watch it and you’ll understand why it ranks among the best movies to watch stoned.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

An oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer head out to Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs. Need I say more? This movie offers the best of the best in psychedelic imagery, anxiety ridden dreamscapes and insane antics. Oh, and did I mention hotel trashing?
Donnie Darko
A movie about everyone’s favorite troubled teen, this one follows Jake Gyllenhaal (aka Donnie Darko) on his crime spree adventures seemingly inspired by a man in a bunny suit who tells him the world will end in 28 days. All along the audience must wonder if the bunny is real or a figment of Darko’s imagination. With an ending that will keep you guessing, you will be reflecting on the plot of this movie almost every time you smoke a bowl.
Being John Malkovich
This movie follows the adventures of an unemployed puppeteer (John Cusack) who takes a dead end parttime office job and unwittingly finds a portal that leads into the mind of John Malkovich. Who would want to be John Malkovich, you might ask? Well apparently everyone gets a turn including lovely co-stars Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener. The bizarre plotline leaves no doubt that this is among the best movies to watch stoned.
Airplane!
Airplane tells the story of a man who is afraid to fly and finds himself having to land a plane after the pilots become sick. It is a spoof on the many disaster movies that came out in the 70’s. And although it was released in 1980, its humor holds up. It will have you in stitches.
Pulp Fiction
Every Quintin Tarantino movie could potentially rank in the best movies to watch stoned category thanks to their somewhat bizarre plot lines. Pulp Fiction takes the cake following the lives of two mob hitman, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and how they all come together in a tale of violence and redemption. Warning: Being that this is a Tarantino film, you can expect lots of blood and guts which may be disturbing for highly introspective stoners.
Grand Budapest Hotel
I admit to finding this one on another writer’s list of best movies to watch stoned and I added it myself mainly because it’s so visually stunning. It also has a charming yet slightly bizarre plot line which involves a writer’s encounters with the hotel owner who recounts the tales of growing up working as a lobby boy in the hotel. It might not have the edge of your seat hilarity and excitement of some of the other best movies to watch stoned on this list, but it’s a good choice for stoners with more sophisticated tastes.
The Big Lebowski
Hilarity ensues when lovable Jeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski is confused for the gangster Jeff Lebowski aka The Big Lebowski. The tale involves kidnapping, drugs, and violence as well as hilarious characters that keep it lighthearted. The Coen brothers kicked it out of the park with this 1998 classic.
